Is my internet fast enough? Wi-Fi tips for smooth TV

Streaming TV depends on a steady connection between your router and your TV box. If channels pause, buffer or look blocky, your home internet is often the reason. Here's how to check and improve it.
First, test one thing at a time
If a single channel buffers, try another channel. If the others play well, the problem is with that one channel and not your internet. If every channel buffers, keep reading.
Restart your router and TV box
It sounds basic, but it fixes a lot:
- Turn off your TV box.
- Unplug your router, wait about 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Wait until the router's lights settle, then turn the TV box on again.
Use a cable if you can
A wired connection is the steadiest option for HD. If your box has a network port and your router is nearby, a network cable removes most Wi-Fi problems.
Getting more from Wi-Fi
If a cable isn't practical:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Many routers offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 5 GHz network is usually faster and less crowded, which suits HD streaming.
- Move closer. Walls, floors and large furniture weaken the signal. Bringing the router and TV box closer together helps.
- Keep the router in the open. Not inside a cabinet or behind the TV.
- Check what else is busy. Large downloads, video calls or game updates on other devices all share the same connection.
Multiview needs more
Multiview shows up to 4 streams at once, and each stream uses its own bandwidth. If one channel plays fine but Multiview struggles, try fewer streams or a wired connection.
Pick the right Buffer setting
In Settings → Playback, the Buffer setting has three options:
- Auto: a sensible choice for most homes.
- Fast start: opens channels quicker.
- Fewer stalls: waits a little longer but copes better with slow internet.
If your connection isn't strong, Fewer stalls is worth trying.
